The Musician's Business & Legal Guide
by Mark Halloran

This is one of the best all-around books that I have found on music law and business. There are chapters on everything from band agreements to record deals to merchandising...All with explanations and written by industry pros (some of lawgirl's former colleagues even!) I highly recommend this book for lawyers and non-lawyers alike.

All You Need to Know About the Music Business

by Donald Passman

A perennial fave of lawyers and musicians... this book explains the wacky music business in simple yet complete terms. And with a sense of humor too!

This Business of Music

by M. William Krasilovsky, et al.

The classic book on the subject... Not exactly an easy read, but packed with information and useful forms. Recommended for those who already have some familiarity with entertainment law subjects.

The Writer Got Screwed, but Didn't Have to: A Screenwriter's Guide to the Legal & Business Practices of the Entertainment Industry
by Brooke Wharton

Okay, I haven't actually read this one, but the contents look very complete and it got some great reviews. There are sections on preventing idea theft, defamation and other intellectual property issues, writing for different media, contracts, getting an agent, and much more...Anyone who purchases this let me know how you like it!

Dealmaking in the Film & Television Industry: From Negotiations through Final Contracts
by Mark Litwak

Mark Litwak was my copyright professor in law school (the regular professor was on sabatical) and he was the worst teacher I ever had. But this is still a good book that I refer to fairly often. Also check out the companion book, Contracts for the Film and Television Industry which contains a variety of useful form agreements.
