I am a college thesis student, and I would like to incorporate a screenplay adapted from a novel into my final thesis. I was wondering how to go about acquiring the rights to adapt a novel to screenplay, whether this is necessary for works of deceased authors, and if any works published prior to a specific date would not require the author's or estate's permission. I was also wondering whether a thesis screenplay requires such permission if it will not be used for commercial purposes.
